Act your age!!

As a child I used to be one of those kids who was more mature than most and used words that only "adults" know. My mother used to say "Act your age!!" Undoubtedly I know I was not the only child to hear this expression. I always was drawn to an older crowd, growing up I was the youngest after all. I. I act younger some days and wiser on others. There is no law that says you must act your age. Ridiculous! Part of the quest for the fountain of youth is in the search to let go of pre conceived notions about who we are "supposed to be" and celebrate the discovery of who you want to be in life. You can be to the extent of Horus Vandergelder from Hello Dolly- staunch and stuck in your ways... or you can be to the extent of Mame - light hearted and always on the edge of discovery and adventure. Age truly is a state of mind. When you discover your youthful nature, you learn that your body follows to a point. We pick activities that are energizing, give vitality and allow us to see with creativity. My mother used to say " Act your age!!" only out of fear of what she thought others would think. For me to concern myself with others thoughts would be time consuming and draining. I appreciate feedback and constructive criticism but I live a life that is full because I pay little mind to what others think. I have done more in my profession before I retired my career than most people get around to doing in the last 30 years of their life. I live life in reverse. I got all my serious stuff done and when people say what do you want to do when you get older.... I tell them - be a kid.
